What is ROM and what is it for, how does it work and what types are there?

So I invite you to continue reading this wonderful section, so that you can learn what ROM memory is for, its function and much more.

What is it for?

When in computing we talk about ROM memory, we refer to a type of storage for mobile phones, computers and other electronic devices, which is responsible for reading access. Hence the premise Read-only ROM memory: what is it and what is it for? How does it work and what types are there?

This means that it can host information, the user can retrieve it, but cannot intervene or modify its content.

This device is of vital importance, the ROM memory is used to start the operating system in electronic devices.

When you press the start button of your electronic device, the ROM allows the initial program to start correctly, and then to start the system.

Data is stored in ROM memory. Since the ROM system does not allow data to be modified, it is used to save some data.

what is rom memory for

Generally, manufacturers save logical and mathematical operations, technical product information, look-up tables, among others.

It is also used to store the product software. In the 1980s, companies that made computers stored software in ROM so that people couldn’t access it.

In such a way that they could not make modifications or alterations that could interrupt the use of any feature, or completely damage the device.

Currently, the ROM memory is used to save the boot operating systems, or some other basic function, for example, the Setup, the BIOS, the Post, among others.

ROM types and their function

In turn, it should be clear what the difference is between RAM and ROM and what types exist between the two, in order to avoid confusion regarding this tutorial.

As with most electronic devices, as time goes by they evolve and improve their physical and technical characteristics.

In the case of ROM, the same has also happened. Over the years they have evolved improving their function.

ROM

It is one of the first memories ever made. It is known as non-volatile memory, since when the device is turned off, it does not lose the information it contains.

Therefore, this type of memory has the ability to work ( store information ) without the need to receive an electrical current.

The OTP or PROM

It is a programmable memory of digital type that needs a device called PROM to be able to receive the writing.

This PROM memory can only be programmed once, because each memory unit requires a small fuse that burns when it is written.

The EPROM

EPROM memory is erasable read-only and can be programmable. It is basically a PROM memory with the ability to erase information by means of ultraviolet light.

You can also erase the information when exposed to very high voltage levels, so that you can erase your information and can perform a replacement.

EEPROM

The EEPROM is a read-only memory that can be erased and re-programmed electrically. It is a modification of the EPROM memory that does not need ultraviolet light to erase the contents inside.

It can be reprogrammed by means of its own circuit, in such a way that it has access to the bits that have the information individually.
