Problems with the audio drivers in windows? So you can fix them

The drivers are one of the essential parts of a computer. Thanks to these small programs, the operating system is able to recognize and use the hardware that we have connected to the computer. Windows, by default, installs a large number of generic drivers that allow us to use most of the equipment’s components and accessories from the start. However, these generic drivers do not work with 100% of devices and peripherals. And, therefore, when one of them is used with an incompatible device, all kinds of problems can appear. Problems that can also be difficult to identify and solve. Like the ones that appear when using external audio cards, or USB headphones, with these generic drivers.

When we connect an external audio card (either a complete audio card, headphones with its own audio card in the USB, etc.) to Windows 10, the operating system usually chooses to use the generic driver included in the operating system to recognize and be able to use this device.

Windows 10 uses “generic drivers”, leading to problems

The problem is that, sometimes, instead of downloading the corresponding driver from Windows Update, or asking the user to install the specific driver, Microsoft loads the generic driver, as is the case with usbaudio2.sys, which comes by default in Windows. 10. And this generic driver usually makes some devices not work. Or they don’t do it correctly.

Since usbaudio2.sys is a generic driver, Windows assumes that the device is installed and working properly. Although in reality it is not like that. In addition, since the generic driver is installed, Windows Update does not search for the specific driver that allows us to use the component without problems.

Fortunately, there are several ways to solve this problem: make Windows use the specific driver for this device. This way we will make our USB audio card work without problems in Windows 10.

How to force Windows to use specific drivers

There are several ways to force Windows to use specific drivers for audio cards or USB headphones that cause problems with our computer. But the most important thing is to make sure that we have the latest version of Windows 10 installed, with the latest cumulative patches, since with each update the download and installation of drivers is improved.

Method 1: if we have not yet connected the device to the PC

In case we have not yet connected the card to the computer (and, therefore, the generic driver has not been associated), what we must do is first install the specific driver manually on the PC. This driver can come on a CD or DVD along with the audio card or peripheral that we have purchased. We can also download the latest version from its main website, from the support section.

Thus, when we connect the peripheral to the PC, Windows will use the new specific driver instead of automatically assigning the generic driver to it.

Method 2: if we have previously connected the device

If we have previously connected the audio card to the PC, and Windows has assigned its generic driver, then we have two options. The first is to try searching for new versions of the driver through Windows Update manually. To do this, we must open the device manager, locate the USB audio card, and in the driver tab, we will select the option to update driver.

If the specific driver is distributed through Windows Update, the operating system will download the specific driver for this device. You will then install it and start using it.

Otherwise, if the driver is not sent through Windows Update, then we will have to install it manually. We must go to the manufacturer’s website, download the latest version of the specific driver for our USB audio card and install it manually on the PC.

Once this is done, we return to the section of the previous screenshot, but instead of choosing the option to update, we will choose the one to ” uninstall the device ” to uninstall the driver that causes problems. Windows will erase the driver associated with the USB audio card and, when you restart the computer, the specific driver that we have installed will be enabled.

And thus, the audio card will be able to work without problems and we will have all its features available.
