Improve windows 10 performance by disabling visual effects

On some occasions we may notice that our computer is not as smooth as it should, especially if we have a computer that is old or not very powerful. The fault of this lack of fluency may be caused by Windows 10. And it is that Microsoft’s operating system has animations and visual effects that it incorporates to give it a better visual appearance. These effects can be deactivated and today we are going to tell you how you can do it.

By default, Windows has a series of animations and visual effects activated to give it a more attractive and modern appearance. These effects can be seen in the shadows of the windows, the desktop icons or the mouse cursor. All of this is used to provide the team with a design that is more attractive to us when using our operating system. But this can cause a performance problem on some computers, especially those with a limited graphics card. Although we cannot really improve the performance of the team, we can save resources. In this way, although we lose a bit of showiness, we will notice a greater real feeling that the entire operating system works in a more fluid way.

To achieve this, we must carry out two very simple actions that are found in different locations within Windows. On the one hand, we will have to deactivate the “Show animations in Windows” function, which is found in the Settings menu, and on the other hand, within the system settings, we must activate the “Adjust for better performance” function. These adjustments should allow us to obtain an improvement in the performance of our equipment, although we cannot expect miracles either. If the hardware of our equipment does not give for more, we cannot make Windows 10 fly, but we can provide it with enough fluidity so that it is more comfortable to use. So that you can do these tasks without any kind of complication, we are going to explain it step by step.

Disable Show animations in Windows

One method to disable Windows 10 animations and visuals is from the Settings menu. To access it we will use the Windows + I keyboard shortcut that will show us the panel immediately. Now, in its menu we will verify that we have a lot of options available to configure all kinds of sections of the operating system. In this case, we must click on the Accessibility button .

Once inside, we navigate to the bottom of the screen, where we will find the Simplify and customize Windows section. Here we must deactivate the button of the Show animations function in Windows. We can also disable the following function, Show transparencies in Windows. Once deactivated and the changes applied, Windows will no longer show the animation of the windows when we open or minimize them, nor will the menus or menu items fade. We will notice that the system now has a somewhat rougher appearance but at the same time lighter and more sober.

Activate the Adjust function for best performance

Another option that we can perform is to activate the Adjust function to obtain the best performance. If we activate it, the system will free up hardware resources so we will notice a loss in the visual quality of Windows 10. On the other hand, it will considerably improve the performance of the system. That is why we must use it with caution and only if we appreciate that the performance of the computer improves considerably in case we deactivate it. Otherwise, we must choose to leave it checked.

To do this we must write System in the Start Menu and select it. Next, click on Advanced system settings. A menu will open, and in the Performance section, we will click on Settings. Here, in the Visual Effects tab, we will click on the « Adjust to obtain the best performance» function. Later we click on Apply and OK, and all the customization options will be deactivated. Once this is done, we should almost immediately notice a better performance of our computer, especially if it is too old or has very limited hardware.

Customize animations, get a better balance between performance and appearance

We can also choose from here to be the ones who manually adjust the settings and the different sections of graphic effects. So that we can activate or deactivate it according to what suits us in favor of a better performance of our equipment, without thereby reducing the appearance of Windows too much.

The most important sections that we should leave deactivated are: Animations on the taskbar, Animate the windows when minimizing and maximizing and Animate the controls and elements within the windows. One of them, such as ” Smooth edges for the screen source”, it is convenient to leave it activated. In this way, we will not have difficulties when reading the letters on the screen. We will even be able to read the smallest letters better, since its smoothing optimizes its viewing better and we should not notice differences with the fluidity of the equipment.

The option to “Show thumbnails instead of icons” can also be interesting to keep active. If we deactivate it, we will stop seeing the preview of the images or videos that we have stored on the computer. Instead, we will go to see predefined icons, something that can be annoying and not very pleasant to see. Since their consumption is very low, we must consider keeping them activated.

With the rest of the options, we can play and leave those that may be of greatest interest to us marked. Thus, we will achieve the best balance between performance and appearance. In addition, this entire process is completely reversible, so if we deactivate any option and we don’t like it, we can always go back and activate it again. The ideal is to try different combinations to see which ones affect the performance of the computer to a lesser extent without reducing the appearance and functionality of the operating system too much.
