How to block Internet access from a program in Windows

Most of the programs installed on your computer can access the Internet, with very few that operate completely offline. There will be times when you want to block a program’s Internet access. For example, you may not want to be continually checked for updates, or be bothered by constantly appearing ads in some; Or it may be that you are simply concerned about some confidential data contained in the software. If its essential features do not depend on Internet connectivity, you can choose to cut off Internet access entirely for that program.

Windows simplifies this for you. Windows Firewall can not only protect your computer from malware and other security threats. This can also be configured to block Internet access for any program.

How do I block a program on my firewall?

By following just a simple set of steps, you can block any software from accessing the internet. The steps are similar for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. You can block both incoming and outgoing traffic for any program. Next we go to the procedure:

Block Internet access from a program

STEP 1. While at the desktop, press Windows + X and select Control Panel from the options. Alternatively, if you’re on Windows 10, type “Control Panel” in the search bar and click Control Panel to open it.

STEP 2. Click Windows Firewall in Control Panel.

STEP 3. On the left side of the next window, click Advanced Settings.

STEP 4. Click Outbound Rules. Here you can restrict internet access for a particular application.

STEP 5. In the Actions panel on the right side of the window, click New Rule.

STEP 6. Click Program and press Next.

STEP 7. Write the path where your program is installed or locate it with the Browse option . The application path is generally in the format “C: \ Program Files \ application.exe” or “C: \ Program Files (x86) \ application.exe”, where “application” is the name of the program that you want to block. Internet access. When you find the program, then click Next.

STEP 8. In the Action window , select Block connection. Click the Next button .

STEP 9. Select when your blocking rules apply to the program. Select all three options to cut off Internet access completely.

STEP 10. Give a name to the new rule you just created. In this example, I have created a rule to block Internet connection to Internet Explorer, so I have named the rule “Block IE”. You can choose any name you want.

STEP 11. Click Finish and your rule will be activated. You should now see the new rule that you created under Outbound Rules.

Go ahead and block incoming connections too if you want to completely block internet access for the program. Select Inbound Rules in step 4 and the rest of the steps are similar.
