When we install Windows 10 on our PC, many of the functions that this operating system brings with it are predefined by default. But of course, it must be borne in mind that many of these can be modified later.
In this way, what we achieve is to have a much more personalized software in our daily work with the team. Keep in mind that Windows 10 is a system that does not stop growing and increasing in terms of its versatility. But at the same time, the developer firm, Microsoft, is fully aware that users require more and more control. In this way, what is allowed, as far as possible, is to customize many of the features that are being implemented.
This is something that we have already talked about many times in the past, since learning all this is something that comes in handy for most. And this not only refers to the user interface making use of themes, wallpapers or colors, but also very important functions. In fact, it is one of them that we are going to focus on in the next few lines and that will surely be very useful for you.
For all this, below we are going to show you how to change the storage locations that are initially predetermined in Windows 10. And it may be the case that, depending on the type of use or data, we want to store these in different units. Keep in mind that a priori Windows 10 saves all types of data with which we can deal, in the same drive where we install the operating system. Specifically, we refer to files that are as commonly used as our office documents, images, music, videos, etc.
We should not save everything in the same Windows 10 drive
In this way, these files are stored, at least by default, in a single unit on the computer, which may not always be interesting or effective for us. To say that that location that Microsoft itself establishes by default when we install the system from scratch is the one that many prefer, but it is not the most recommended. We say this because depending on the type of work that we carry out, or the files that we prioritize, some should be saved in other units. For example, it may be the case that some prefer to store their office or photographic files on another partition or hard drive that we have installed on the PC. This is something that can be given for security or space reasons, for example.
It is for all this that, if necessary, Windows 10 itself allows us to change and customize those disk locations by default, as we will show you below. This for example can be used if we have a low-space SSD disk where Windows 10 is, as well as another slower HDD disk, but with much more capacity. Thus, we may be interested in saving the photos and videos in the second and leaving the first for the system.
Well, all this is something that we are going to achieve through the Windows 10 Settings application, which we access from the “Win + I” key combination. Therefore, the window corresponding to this integrated functionality appears below.
Manage the data to save in Windows 10 from Settings
Once we are located in this application of the operating system, we must click on the “System” option to see all the options available in this section. Thus, among all those that we find on the left side of the interface, in this particular case we opted for the so-called “Storage”.
Then we will have to go a little lower in this same window, until we find the link that says “Change the storage location of new content”, where we click. It will be then when we can see the section that really interests us in these lines. Then the system will take us to a new screen in which all the default storage units are shown .
These specifically refer to a total of six different types of data. Among these we find the applications that we install, documents, music, photos and videos, movies and series, and finally maps. As you can see first-hand, Windows 10 initially establishes the C drive to save these files.
But of course, as we mentioned before, this is something that we will have the possibility to modify and customize. Therefore, in order to carry out these tasks that we are commenting on, what we do is click on the drop-down list that is located to the right of each of the data types. Thus, by clicking on each of the proposals discussed above, the list will show the rest of the options available at this time.
Advantages of saving our data in different locations
How could it be otherwise, here the disk units that we have installed in the computer are shown, in addition to the partitions that are available in it at that moment. Therefore, to change we will only have to go to the corresponding type of file and select the unit or partition on which we want to dump this data.
Of course, we must bear in mind that this will be a permanent change, but that it will be effective from that moment, the previous ones will continue in the main unit. Once we have made the changes, they will be saved and applied instantly in Windows 10.
In the same way, we must take into consideration that if we select a removable drive such as an external hard drive or USB memory, there will be no problem. But of course, it is clear that this is not the best option unless the unit in question is permanently connected to the computer.
To finish we will tell you that the correct data storage will help us to manage the available space in the units in a much more effective way. At the same time, it will help us to locate and distribute in a more orderly way the contents with which we work on a daily basis.
Save your data to OneDrive
OneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage service that, for better or worse, is tightly integrated into the operating system. We can have 15 GB free for registering, or get up to 1 TB of storage to save our data if we sign up for Office 365.
Among the many options that OneDrive offers us, one of the most useful to avoid losing our data and having it always available are backup copies. This client will allow us to synchronize our desktop and personal folders with the cloud, so that our files are always safe.
In addition to having our data always protected, we will also be able to have it from anywhere. Without a doubt, a great option to safeguard our data that we cannot ignore.
Change the path of personal folders
If we usually use by default the folders that Windows creates for us within our profile (for example, the one for photos, videos, downloads, etc.), we must know that Microsoft also allows us to choose where to save the files, keeping the folder always in its place .
What we must do in this case is locate the folder in question of which we want to change the path. We right-click on it, open the folder properties, and go to the « Location « folder .
Here we can change the directory where we want all the data to be stored. We can move the current folder to a new hard drive or directory, look for a new one (leaving the data where it is now) or, if we want to go back to the old one, restore the default path.
