How to protect the router and prevent them from hacking your WiFi

If you’re not careful, someone could break into your WiFi router and take control of your home network. This can lead to more problems than you might imagine, so you should take some steps to protect your home WiFi router.

Remember that a router works as a route for any data transfer. If someone malicious or a virus affects it, you may start to lose data and experience various problems. To hinder this possibility, you should take into account the recommendations below.

How to protect your home WiFi router

1. Change administrator password

The administrator password of your router must be completely confidential. Security filtering is a common way for intruders to access your home network at ease.

Routers come with a factory default password, and hackers know that many people do not change this password.

For these reasons, change your password as soon as possible after the connections are set up. You should also do it from time to time, writing it down in a safe place, to have more confidence.

2. Protect your WiFi network

As we know, the WiFi signal is not something that you can limit to the space of your own home. Depending on the power of the router, your neighbors will be able to receive the signal. This is why it is very risky to have your WiFi network unprotected without a password.

Some people can easily access confidential information or resources on your network, such as your security cameras. They can also overwhelm your bandwidth by downloading large files over your network.

To avoid this you need to configure a password for your WiFi network, which is complex, difficult for anyone to guess. You must also make sure that your network is configured with the WPA security standards .

Another recommendation would be to modify the SSID, which is the name of the network signal. The latter is a plus, since with the model name of the router, any nearby hacker has the possibility of finding a breach in your network.

3. Disable UPnP and WPS

Routers often come with particular default settings and features that are vulnerable to hacking. Among these are WPS and UPnP

Wireless Protected Setup (WPS) makes it easy to connect by only requiring you to enter a pin. But this feature is very vulnerable and is easily exploited by hackers with free hacking tools. The best thing to do is turn off WPS on your router.

Universal Plug n Play (UPnP) is another way that many hackers and malware manage to infiltrate your network. UPnP is essential for global communication and without it some applications may not function effectively. Due to its high manageability, disabling it may not make much of a difference.

4. Control your network

Managing the security details of your router is very important. You can carry out this procedure effectively through the team administration control panel, or you can choose to use a third-party tool like Fing.

Some routers allow you to register particular devices with unique nicknames for easy recognition.

Either of these two methods will help you know if there is an unauthorized device connected to your network. It will allow you to be aware and control who uses your network.

5. Update the firmware

Every time your router’s firmware is updated, new features appear, including security ones. Often these updates stem from the latest threats that keep popping up. Therefore, if your router’s firmware is up to date, such threats cannot affect your network devices.

Recent models make this whole process easy and some will even automatically inform you if there is a new update. Others will update automatically, but older models require going to the manufacturer’s page to download updates. Therefore, it is highly recommended to choose the newest models with more advanced features.

These updates could also conveniently improve range coverage, speed, and even network strength.

Protect the WiFi router

Taking the opportunity to protect both your WiFi network and the router is very important. There will always be malicious people who can see your WiFi signal.

It is very useful that most routers allow you to adjust their security settings, which we can take advantage of to make them more secure. You will never be completely sure that you cannot be hacked, but the precautions mentioned above will go a long way toward protecting your WiFi network.
