How to block Internet pages from Windows Host file

To block Internet pages on your computer, you do not need any additional programs. Next in this short note I will show you how you can use the Windows host file to block Internet pages.

In certain circumstances it will be very necessary to restrict access to some web pages. For example, on your children’s computer, on the PC at work or to limit our access to certain social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Whatever the case, you can block web pages using the Windows host file.

Block Internet Pages by Windows Host

# 1. Locate the host file in the following directory.

C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc

You can access it by browsing or typing the path in File Explorer or in the Run window.

You must replace C: with the corresponding drive letter if the operating system is installed on another drive.

# 2. In the directory you will see several files, from which we must choose and open the hosts.

IMPORTANT: To avoid inconveniences when saving the changes you make to the file, I recommend that you temporarily move the file to the desktop. This will allow you to modify, save the changes and finally return it to its original location.

You must double-click or right-click the file and open it with Notepad.

# 3. You must locate the lines at the end that begin with the text: 127.0.0.1 localhost or :: 1 localhost, similar to how they are in the following image.

# 4. Add the web pages to block. You can block as many websites as you want:

  • Place the cursor at the end of the last line and press the Enter key to add another blank line at the end.
  • You will require one line for each site, starting with the IP 127.0.0.1 and leaving a space between the IP and the page to block.

For example, if you want to block Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or other social networks, you can do it as shown in the image above.

# 5. After adding all the sites you want to block, you must now save the changes using the File> Save option or the Alt + G keyboard shortcut .

Block websites without programs

One of the most implemented and effective ways to block web pages is by using the Windows host file. Either to prevent access to adult content, entertainment, leisure or other sensitive content websites.

You should take into account that most websites have multiple domains, so an advanced user might look for ways to enter blocked sites.

For example, if you are restricting access to www.facebook.com, an experienced user could easily access the mobile version of the site using the domain m.facebook.com. For this reason, you must include in the hosts file all the domains that can be used to enter a particular site.
