The ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error in Google Chrome can be due to various causes. Which range from a wrong configuration in the date and time of the device you are using, to a corrupted hosts file or an error in the QUIC protocol that causes it to block the connection between the server and the computer.
However, there are other reasons behind this browser failure. Such as a web or IP address blocked by a firewall or antivirus, a browser’s DNS cache that is already out of date, etc.
In order to find a solution to the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error of the browser, you must first determine what is the failure or cause of it. Pay attention to the following list and try the different alternatives one by one, until you can get it.
Restart router or internet router
This is the most logical and feasible option in many cases. Just turn off the router, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again. This should quickly fix the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error . In case it works, it was just a momentary internet server failure. Otherwise, keep trying the following list of alternatives.
Correctly set the time and date of the device

- Click on the time and date icon on your computer’s task bar.
- Press ” Change date and time settings … “.
- Select ” Change date and time.”
- This will open a new window in which you will have to change the date and time of the computer based on the time zone of the country or state in which you are.
Once you finish, click ” OK ” and close the pop-up window. In this way the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error should disappear, check that it is and, if not, try any of the following options.
Clear SSL and browser cache
Sometimes the data stored in the SSL cache and in the browser, tend to cause errors in the browser, including ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. So, in this circumstance, what is recommended to do is delete all the information corresponding to this category.
To do this, you need to follow the instructions described below, for each of the cases:

- Select ” Settings.”
- Scroll until you find the “ Privacy and security ” section and click on “ Clear browsing data”.
- Pull down the ” Time Interval ” menu and select ” Since Always “.
- Click on ” Clear data.”
Now you must clear the SSL cache, for this you must:

- Click on the ” Content ” tab .

Although the methods described above are the most effective to fix this error in the browser, the cause may not be found in any of them. In this case you will have to try other alternatives such as deactivating the antivirus, repairing the QUIC protocol or any of those described below.
Disable Windows 10 antivirus
Another cause for this failure in the browser lies in the firewall or in the Windows 10 antivirus. If you have a computer with said Operating System, this “protector” could detect during the SSL / TLS protocol analysis that it is an unsecured website and, therefore, prevent access.
Therefore, to verify that this is or is not the problem, you must deactivate the antivirus or the firewall of the computer for a few moments. This, although it will leave your computer vulnerable to attacks while it is disabled, could clear your doubts.
Disable browser extensions
Although Chrome extensions serve to improve the experience and facilitate tasks in the browser, any change in the original programming of the same can cause crashes and generate errors such as ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. In these types of cases, what is recommended is to temporarily disable any extension you have installed.
To do this you must go to the Google menu (the three dots), click on ” More tools ” and click on the ” Extensions ” option . Once inside the settings, disable all the extensions you have in the browser and restart it to verify that the error has disappeared.
Disconnect QUIC protocol
The QUIC protocol was implemented to give additional speed to browsers when connecting to the network, including Google Chrome. This is activated by default in Google Chrome and may be the cause of the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error .
To solve this problem, go to the path chrome: // flags / # enable-quic from the address bar of the browser and deactivate the protocol in question.
Reset or delete hosts file
In addition to everything mentioned above, there is one last option that you can implement to fix the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR error in Google Chrome. Which consists of repairing the hosts file or deleting it from the computer.
