WPAN: what is this network standard and what is it for

The Internet covers a very large area, with multiple standards, devices and tools that make it possible to surf the web. Within all this there are many terms that differentiate each of the factors that compose it. In this article we will explain what the WPAN standard is and what it is for. Perhaps it is unknown to many readers and we are going to explain what it consists of. In this way we will know how to differentiate it from other terms.

What is a WPAN network

When we talk about the term WPAN we mean a wireless personal area network. WPAN is its acronym in English. Here they include short-range wireless networks that do not cover an area of ​​more than a few tens of meters. This type of network is used to connect a wide variety of devices, such as printers, mobiles, computers … All this wirelessly, without using any type of wiring.

Keep in mind that WPAN is not a unique technology. This means that within this standard we can include different technologies that allow devices to be connected wirelessly. Here we can name Bluetooth or infrared connections, for example.

Logically WPAN has a limited scope, as we have mentioned. If we think of Bluetooth, we use devices with a short range, which does not usually pass a few tens of meters. The same goes for infrared, which allows you to connect devices at even closer distances.

All of these devices are typically used for personal use. Hence the name of wireless personal area network. In order to use this type of network, you must have certain components. The first thing we need is an emitter, which is the device that creates the signal or request. It also requires a receiver, which is the device that receives the signal. On the other hand it is necessary to have an encoder for the signal to be transmitted, the line (waves, infrared …), as well as the decoder.

How we use WPAN networks

A WPAN network is used primarily to have the ability to establish communications between different personal devices. Here we can include a mobile phone, tablets, laptops … These devices are connected within a small area, which is usually 10 meters. In this way we can have a proper and correct use of these equipment.

Logically the main objective is to connect these devices without the need to use cables for it. It allows us a direct connection as long as these devices are within range.

Types of networks to connect devices

There are several types of networks that meet these requirements that we mentioned. They are technologies that we can use to connect the equipment with each other wirelessly without the need to use any type of cable.

Bluetooth

One of the most popular technologies in this regard is Bluetooth. It allows us to share files between devices, images, videos … Basically any type of information. The devices have to be within the actuation range, although not directly to the side or visible. Keep in mind that Bluetooth has improved over time. Today we can have more stable connections and also have a greater reach.

Without a doubt, it is a classic in connectivity between mobile devices. Over time it has been improving and offers greater speed, stability and also range. However, it is still a widely used method of connecting equipment. It is not only used to send and receive files, but also to configure settings and access certain devices.

Zigbee

An alternative to Bluetooth and also technology used in WPAN networks is Zigbee. Allows you to connect devices to each other wirelessly. It is present in certain household appliances and also in toys. It works in the 2.4 GHz band. It has a lower transfer speed when compared to Bluetooth, but instead offers a greater range in terms of distance.

Infrared

Finally, a third technology that we could include in the WPAN group is infrared. Allows you to establish a connection between two devices wirelessly. It is used in personal devices such as printers, mobile phones, computer connections, etc.

Wireless connectivity is very important today

One issue that we should not overlook is the fact that wireless connectivity is of great importance today. There are many devices that we have around us and that connect without the need for cables. We are especially talking about what is known as the Internet of Things, something that has given a very important boost to the connectivity of homes.

If we look back, not too long ago it was normal to connect to a computer by cable to surf the Internet. Little by little, mobile devices, laptops and many devices with wireless connectivity emerged. They allow us to connect to the network without using any type of wiring.

Now, the technology we use to connect has also improved over time. Today’s Wi-Fi has nothing to do with what we had 15 years ago. The computers we use are also more prepared, have a greater range of options and allow us to navigate faster and with fewer problems on the Internet.

Therefore, the options we have to connect wirelessly, send files or connect devices to each other, are very wide. At all times they allow us to maintain communication between equipment without the need to use any wiring.
