A climograph is a visual scheme in which the rainfall and temperature values of a specific location are shown . In general, the measurements are separated by months during a year . This type of graph is used to carry out comparative analyzes in a period of time with climatological variables.

Making this diagram can be cumbersome if you use presentation or text programs . However, using Microsoft Excel to do it, it won’t take more than ten minutes.

For this reason, we present this post to you, where you will learn how to create your own climate charts and take your analysis to another level .

What should we take into consideration when making a climogram in Excel?

The first thing to keep in mind is that there are certain rules when making one of these charts . Both its form and its content must be meticulously crafted.

As a general rule, the mean temperature values of each month and the precipitation corresponding to it are represented simultaneously . In the first case a solid line is used , while in the second vertical bars are used .

They are taken all twelve months of each year over a period of 20 or 30 years . (This in a professional job done by climatologists . However, if it is a hobby or hobby, you can take a more limited sample as a practice).

The data you collect must be taken from reliable sources such as national meteorological services or universities. Needless to say, they must have the same unit of measurement . You can convert online with the Google search bar .

The arrangement of the axes must be, by consensus, in such a way that the months of the year are located horizontally, from January to December. While in the verticals (it has two) the average temperatures on a 5 degree scale are located on the right .

On the left axis, the scale of average monthly rainfall is placed , on a double scale with respect to the previous one, that is, every 10 millimeters. The reason for the difference in measurement between the two vertical axes is that an aridity index can be applied in this way. Steps to make a climogram in Excel to keep track of climatological data

The first thing you should do is have the table of measurements you want to analyze at hand . It will have to contain the monthly averages for a specific location .

As an example, we will use the following table that corresponds to the city of Madrid during the year 2012:

Once you have the information ready, you just have to follow these steps:

  • Launch Microsoft Office in any version.
  • Create a new blank book .
  • Transcribe the data to the table, paying attention not to miss any number.
  • Next, create a new line chart . You will achieve this by pressing the corresponding button in the “Graphics” section found in the “Insert” tab .
  • Doing so will create a blank box, you can move it and place it where it is most comfortable for you.

  • Now is the time to add information to our blank schematic. To do this, press the right mouse button on it and choose “Select data”.
  • In this small window, press the “Add” button , a new box will appear, where you will have to place the name of the series. However, it is most convenient to select it from our table . Which in the example is “Average temperature” . In values, delete the content “= {1}” and replace it by choosing the measures that correspond to the previous item .

  • Click “Accept” .
  • Perform the same steps, but this time with “Precipitation” . If you make a mistake in these steps, don’t worry, use the “Modify” button .
  • In the right column there are numbers from 1 to 12, which we must replace with the months . To do this, click on “Edit” and then select them from the first row .
  • Touch “Accept .

As you can see, both measurements are expressed in lines . Being that the precipitations must be it in vertical bars .

To change this, select the line that corresponds to it (in this case the orange one):

  • Right click and choose “Change type of series chart” .
  • In this menu, tell the program that the series “Precipitations” must go in “Grouped columns”. To do this, display the sub menu that is on the side.
  • Press “Accept” .

As we mentioned before, a climate graph must have two vertical axes, since they use two different scales .

By default, Excel associates both series to a single one:

  • To change this, right-click on the mean temperature line and choose “Format data series” .
  • A side panel will appear , in which you must indicate the latter as “Secondary axis” . Here you can also customize the colors of the lines and bars if necessary.

  • Now that we have two different scales, we need to name the axes . You will achieve this by clicking on the “+” sign that appears in the upper right corner of the diagram and selecting “Axis title” .
  • Change the names and optionally match the colors that correspond to each type of chart.

Make sure that both vertical axes respect the scales we mentioned earlier . That is, every 10 mm in rainfall and every 5 degrees in average monthly temperature .

Then follow these steps:

  • To do this, press the right button on one of them and choose “Format axis” .
  • Then, in the side panel, modify the limits and units. Which should be the same in all the climograms you make in the future, to give meaning to the study.
  • In the example, we add negative 5 degrees to the average temperature.
  • You can change the size of the weather chart by dragging the extreme points of the box.
  • Save your document by pressing “Ctrl + G” or in the “File” tab , “Save” .
