Bitlockerutility: if you use bitlocker you cannot miss this program

BitLocker is Microsoft’s hard drive encryption software. This software is included by default in the Professional edition of Windows 10 and allows users to encrypt all the data on the drives so that it is kept securely. Thus, in the event of theft, or someone trying to recover our data, they will not be able to do so if they do not have the corresponding encryption key. Data encryption is one of the best security measures we can take today to prevent our personal files from falling into the wrong hands. However, it is also dangerous, since if something fails we will completely lose access to them.

If our computer and the operating system work normally, we have nothing to worry about. When we turn on the computer we will enter the encryption password and all the data will be accessible. However, when something goes wrong, for whatever reason, is when the trouble begins.

The purpose of encryption is to prevent anyone, whoever, from accessing the data without the appropriate software and password. Not even ourselves. Therefore, if our operating system fails or becomes corrupted, we will most likely lose access to the data we had on the hard drive.

Fortunately, there is a simple program that seeks to help us recover the data that is inside a BitLocker-encrypted drive. This is BitLockerUtility.

BitLockerUtility: the must-have software for BitLocker users

BitLockerUtility is completely free and open source software designed to help users who have trouble starting their computer with an encrypted hard drive to recover the information on it.

This software is based on a WinPE image along with a series of PowerShell scripts in a clear and simple terminal interface so that anyone can retrieve data if they have trouble starting Windows.

The main features of this software are:

  • Generates the recovery ID associated with the encryption key.
  • Unlocks BitLocker-encrypted drives (as long as you have the recovery key).
  • Allows BitLocker to be suspended on the drive.
  • It allows turning off encryption, and therefore decrypting the entire drive.
  • Shows all storage drives, both encrypted and unencrypted.
  • It allows to open a command line to control the PC.

In the following video we can see this tool in action, seeing how it is used and how it helps us recover the hijacked data inside a BitLocker-encrypted drive.

Some practical cases in which this program can help us are, for example, when Windows does not finish booting with a blue screen, the operating system is corrupted or when a data recovery software has not been able to repair the corrupted data.

How to download and use this tool

As we have already said, BitLockerUtility is a totally free and open source tool. In order to use it, the first thing we must do is access the following link in order to download the latest version available.

BitLockerUtility is distributed as an ISO image, an image that we will have to use in Live mode to start the computer. Therefore, to use it, it is best to use the Rufus program to burn this ISO to a USB memory.

Once the ISO is saved to the USB memory, we can start the computer with it and follow the instructions to recover the data inside the BitLocker-encrypted drive.

Security tips when encrypting with BitLocker

Encrypting data on a hard drive is an essential security and privacy measure for any user. More, especially, if we use a laptop that we can lose or can be stolen. However, it is also dangerous. Encrypting the data means that no one, not even us, will be able to access it without the corresponding password. This means that if we forget or lose the password, the PC will be unusable, and we will have to completely format the disk to be able to use it again.

Therefore, if we want to avoid problems, it is vital that, when we create the drive with BitLocker, we also create the recovery file that Microsoft offers us. This file is nothing more than a private key, and it will allow us to decrypt the data on the disk in case of error. We must keep this file in a safe place so that it cannot fall into the wrong hands. It is also recommended to keep the password in another safe place.

Of course, during the encryption process it is advisable to have the PC connected to the power and not be using the computer. This will reduce the probability that something will go wrong and we may lose our data.
