How to put password to a folder in Windows 10

You always want to keep your confidential files and folders safe and protected from unauthorized access, especially if you share a computer with other people. To do this, in this post we will see how you can put a password to a folder in Windows 10.

If you are not careful with your confidential information, such as personal photos and videos, banking information, etc., it could fall into the wrong hands. Fortunately, Windows 10 includes a native way to protect files and folders. Next we will see this and other ways to protect folders with a password.

1. Set a password to a folder with File Explorer

This method is suitable for the average user, but if you are trying to protect critical documents on a large scale, you should purchase more advanced encryption software. Next, let’s see the steps to key a folder in Windows 10.

# 1.  Open Windows 10 File Explorer.

# 2.  Go to the file or folder you want to protect, right click on the item and choose the Properties option from the context menu.

# 3.  Now click on the Advanced Options button .

# 4. Select the check box that says Encrypt content to protect data, click Apply, and then click OK.

# 5. Next, the system will ask you to choose if you want to lock the folder or the folder with all its contents. Then click OK.

When the process is complete, you will be prompted to back up your encryption key if you have never used the feature before. Then your files will now be protected and encrypted with a key linked to your Windows user account.

The system will throw out a nonsensical text every time someone tries to access your encrypted files.

2. Password protect folders with WinRAR

WinRAR is a file compression and encryption program that is available for free. But also, you can use it to protect folders and files with a password. Then follow these steps to key a folder.

# 1.  Download and install WinRAR if it is not already on your system.

# 2.  With the program installed, go to File Explorer and locate the file or folder you want to protect.

# 3.  Now right click on it and select the Add to file option .

That will create a new compressed file with the exact contents of the original file or folder.

# 4. In the file creation wizard, select the Set password button in the lower right corner.

# 5.  In the new pop-up window, check the Encode filenames box , enter a password, repeat it, and click OK.

A compressed and password-encrypted folder will be created, leaving the original file or folder. You can delete the folder without a password and keep the WinRAR archive, which you will need to unzip and decrypt.

WinRAR is one of the best free programs for this task, but you can also use 7-Zip. You can also go for commercial software like Protected Folder or Folder Guard, but they come with a price tag.

Protect files and folders in Windows 10

Password-protecting confidential files or folders is a basic security practice. If you have personal photos or videos, sensitive information or any private file, it is best to use one of these procedures to obtain an additional level of security.

Alternatively, you can use BitLocker to protect entire drives, such as a pendrive and even the hard drive where you have Windows installed. This could be thought of as a virtual vault, which encrypts any file or folder that you need to keep safe.
