Spotify is the most popular streaming music platform that we can find on the entire network. Through it we can access practically all existing music for free (with ads) and 100% legal. Over the years, this platform has evolved to become the best. And surely more than one accompanies you in your day to day, whether at leisure or at work. However, we may occasionally encounter some problems when using this program, such as that it suddenly stopped being heard.
If we are trying to listen to music on Spotify, and for some reason this program cannot be heard, it may be due to many reasons. It may happen that there is a configuration problem with our computer, that the program has been silenced for some reason and even that the servers are down.
Next we are going to explain how to identify the cause why Spotify is not heard and how to solve these problems.
Isolate the problem: are you sure it’s not the Internet?
The first thing we must do is isolate the problem to find out if the fault is in our computer or it could be a matter of the Spotify server or even our local connection. And we must keep more in mind that when we talk about Spotify, we refer to a platform that works mostly online. With this, what we want to tell you is that we need a stable Internet connection that works without problems. Therefore, for this reason, we recommend that you check that the router works, as well as the cable or the WiFi that we use to access it. Something that we can also do to quickly resolve doubts is to try using another online service, a game, or simply the browser itself .
Therefore, if we see that we can access other web pages without problem, it is that our connection works as it should. Otherwise, we already know where the problem is, so we will have to take the appropriate measures. At the same time we must make sure that the problem does not come from their part, that is, from the servers of the online music service themselves. Therefore, at this point, the first thing we must do is access the Downdetector website to check if Spotify is working correctly or there may be an error on the servers because of which it is not working.
If the servers are working correctly, then the problem is already in our computer. Anyway, we can check it by trying to play music on another device (for example, on our smartphone) to see if it works on it.
Check if the problem is with the application or the PC
Spotify offers us two ways to listen to music on the PC. The first one is through the application (either Win32 or UWP), and the second through the web page. The most common is to use the desktop Spotify application, since it is much more complete than the web page.
If we are listening to Spotify from your application and it has stopped working for us, the first thing to look at is if the Spotify web player works, being able to isolate the problem much better. If the web works correctly, then the problem is in our application.
If Spotify does not work for us from the web, then the problem may be in the sound of our computer. We must check that we have the speakers turned on, that we have a volume high enough to hear it well, and very importantly, make sure that we have chosen the appropriate output device.
If the other sounds do work on the computer, the next step will be to make sure that the Spotify application is not muted. If there are other applications that do not work, then we must try to update the Windows sound drivers, and even test if with other speakers, or headphones, the sound works.
Check that Spotify is not muted
It may happen that Spotify does not sound on our computer because the application has been silenced. Windows 10 allows us to easily silence applications individually so that they stop sounding so as not to disturb.
We may have muted the app ourselves, or it may have muted it automatically. The latter can occur, for example, when we change the PC’s audio input or output source to use it with other programs, such as Skype. In this way, the program makes sure that the music does not interfere with our call. But unfortunately, he forgets to unmute once we finish the call.
Therefore, we must ensure that the Spotify application is not muted by opening the Windows 10 volume mixer. If the application appears with the forbidden icon on the speaker, it will be muted. If not, it should work normally. If it is muted, just click on this icon to unmute.
Clear Spotify cache
As we play music, Spotify keeps a huge cache of data on our computer. This allows us to listen to previously listened songs without having to download them again, saving traffic and freeing up load on our PC.
It may happen that the cache has become corrupted. And the truth is that Spotify does not offer any option of its own to delete it, free up space and solve these problems. Therefore, we must do it manually.
We must open the main Spotify window and, with the keyboard shortcut Control + P, open the preferences of this program. At the bottom of the whole, within the advanced options, we will find a section called “Storage of songs without connection”.
We must look at the location that appears here registered, since it will be where the program will save all the cache.
Once this path is pointed, we close Spotify and, then, what we must do is move to that location from the Windows file explorer to delete the contents of the folder manually.
Once the contents of the folder have been deleted, we reopen Spotify and the program will start working with the song cache clean.
Reinstalling Spotify may fix the problems
If all of the above has failed and there is no way to get the sound to work in Windows 10, then it may happen that it is the application that has become corrupted. In that case, what we must do is completely uninstall the application from our computer and reinstall it from the program’s official website.
If we are using the Win32 application, we can try to install the new UWP from the Microsoft Store, a version that is identical to Win32, but with important security and performance improvements. This application can be downloaded from here:
In case the app that gives us problems is the UWP, what we must do is uninstall it from our computer and download the latest version again from the same link to the Windows 10 store.
Although we should have done it earlier, we must also restart the computer (a full restart, not power cycle) so that if there is a problem with our operating system, it can be solved.
Update audio drivers in Windows
There are many cards and audio chips that our Windows PC can integrate right now. It is for this reason and for the importance they have at the moment, which is why their manufacturers do not stop updating their components to improve their quality and functionality. This is something that can occur faster than we might think at first, hence the importance of being vigilant. We tell you all this in this specific case, because obviously the drivers can directly affect playback on Spotify.
It is for all this, that other measures that we can use in the case at hand, is updating these audio drivers in Windows. For this, what we have to do is access the Device Manager of the operating system by right-clicking on the Start menu. Once in it, we find a long list of elements, which are those that are part of our PC. Well, in it we have to locate the entry that corresponds to the audio, as we mentioned before.
Thus, we will see the section on Audio and video controllers, a list that we display to see the sound input. In many cases it could be Realtek, so we click with the right mouse button.
Then we will only have to click on the option called Update driver from the list of options that will appear on the screen.
Check your speakers (and try others)
Although it may seem like common sense, many times the most obvious thing is what causes us the most headaches. If we continue to have problems, we must make sure that the PC speakers are plugged in and turned on . These, normally, usually have an LED that indicates that they are connected. If this is off, we must see why. In addition, if the speakers have independent audio control (that wheel to increase or decrease the volume) we must make sure that the volume is raised enough so that the music is audible.
Tower computers usually have 6 mini-jack connections behind them, each of them for a type of device: speakers, micro, surround, etc. If our speakers are connected through this well-known connection, we must make sure that they are well connected to the green plug . If they are connected by USB, normally we do not have this problem, but we must verify that Windows detects them correctly. And if they use an intermediate DAC, it works fine.
In the worst case, it may happen that the speakers themselves are broken and that is why they do not sound. To find out, we must try to connect a different sound equipment to the computer. A few simple mobile helmets can help us to check whether the music is playing through them or not. If we have other speakers at home, we can also try them.
